Kansas Department of Health & Environment is seeking a driven, dynamic, and career oriented individual to perform clinical laboratory testing for specimens of public health significance. Requires a Bachelor’s of science degree, related clinical experience preferred. Located in Topeka. Job training will be provided. Inquire & apply for Job Req #K0241834 at www.jobs.ks.gov E.O.E. The Microbiologist will Perform complex clinical serological testing for SARS-CoV-2, HIV, hepatitis, syphilis and rubella testing using manual and instrument-based immunoassay methods. Operate automated NAAT instrument platform for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhea testing for disease surveillance monitoring. All testing must be completed using established standard operating procedures. Prompt and accurate reporting of results is required.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: Performs QC and QA on analytical tests through daily monitoring of assay challenges and by proficiency challenges. Assists in cross-training of new or current staff and is able to second read behind less experienced staff when they are presented with challenges. Assists supervisor by informing when essential supplies are needed and when equipment is not meeting performance requirements. Ensure worksheets for testing and equipment maintenance are accurate and complete. Perform daily receiving/login for clinical specimens along with other unit staff. Process and label specimens to prepare them for daily testing procedures. Performs HIV and Syphilis confirmation testing following written procedures outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures manual. Prompt and accurate reporting of results is required. Performs other duties as assigned including annual trainings and quality improvement projects to ensure the analyst and the lab operate at peak performance.
Qualifications
Education:
High School, GED
Licensing & Certification:
Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology or Chemistry or other related fields. Experience may be substituted for education as determined relevant by the agency.

At least an associate degree in laboratory science, medical laboratory technology or related science field, with 24 semester hours of science that include 6 semester hours of Chemistry, 6 semester hours of Biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination.
