Licensed Practical Nurse

In a team relationship with the Registered Nurse, the Licensed Practical Nurse contributes to the nursing process through ongoing systematic data collection, assisting in the health assessment, recording observations, goal identification, and patient health education. Performs duties under the direct supervision of the Health Services Administrator and is accountable for use of delegated authority. Pursuant to §15.2–1603 of the Code of Virginia incumbent is appointed at will and serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff.
Examples of Work
Responds to and initiates the care for medical emergencies throughout the facility. This includes the ability to perform continuous CPR until properly relieved.
Administers and documents medications on the Medication Administration Record.
Assists with histories and physicals on inmates.
Assesses patient’s health status and refers to appropriate level of healthcare provider.
Physically assists Physician in patient examinations and treatments.
Documents all nursing care provided.
Implements and follows up on Physician / Dentist written orders and verbal orders if permitted.
Teaches healthcare information to patients and correctional staff.
Adheres to safety and security policies and participates in disaster drills.
Performs venipuncture and I.V. therapy, if certified.
Collects samples, specimens and cultures per Physician orders.
Follows security regulations for keys, sharps and controlled medications.
Ability to deal with and respond to stressful situations in a stressful environment.
Requires regular and reliable attendance.
Adheres to Universal Precautions and other appropriate infection control practices.
Qualifications
Collects pertinent data through observation, interview, other members of the health team, and communicates changes in the patient condition to other patient care providers.
Records all data obtained through assessment in the patient’s health record.
In a team relationship with the Registered Nurse, contributes to the Nursing Care Planning.
Assist in the formation of a written plan.
Assists in identifying both short and long-term timed measurable goals with anticipated behavioral changes.
Assists in setting priority when planning care to meet the patient’s needs.
Assist with patient healthcare and participates in multi-disciplinary care conferences.
Counts CDS Drugs and contraband, if required.
Assist Physician in minor medical/surgical procedures.
Transcribes and posts all therapeutic orders generated by the Physician.
Initiates and documents prescribed treatments for nursing interventions in compliance with policy and procedure.
Administers routine and/or PRN medications as ordered.
Practices universal precautions when providing nursing procedures.
Assists in maintaining a neat, clean and safe environment for patients and coworkers.
Keeps patient information confidential and respects the patient’s right to privacy.
Keeps the health team informed of observations and changing conditions of patients.
Must maintain and show proof of an active state nursing license and place a copy of the license in the personnel file maintained by the RN supervisor.
Is cognizant and adheres to all security regulations of the institution.
Attends scheduled in-service programs and staff meetings.
Maintains an active CPR certification.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduate from a Licensed Practical Nursing Program. Currently licensed as a Practical Vocational Nurse in the state. Good physical health, ability to function in a stressful environment, and relate well to the patients, security staff, and healthcare team members.

The job may risk exposure to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, noise, fumes, odors, moving machinery, electrical shock, traffic and toxic or caustic chemicals. Risk of exposure to bio-hazard communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS
Must have the capability to hear, speak and see to communicate with the general public. Must have the strength and ability to apprehend, subdue and restrain criminal offenders. Physical exertion may be required to climb stairs and over walls, run, bend, twist, reach, crawl through tight spaces, kneel in confined areas; sit for prolonged periods of time; move/push/pull, or lift heavy objects exceeding 50 lbs.; Subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies. Requires annual physical. Requires operation of standard office equipment.
