Mechanical Engineering Manager oversees a team of Mechanical engineers that design, analyze, and maintain mechanical components and systems to meet specified equipment standards. Implements departmental policies and procedures to delegate workflow and ensure projects are completed on time and within the required specifications and quality standards ensuring projects follow the organizational best practices for design. Contributes to the development of processes and procedures. Candidates for this position are expected to have 6 years of engineering experience in a design role. Preferred candidates will have industrial plant or system design experience and be familiar with typical industrial mechanical equipment. Candidates must demonstrate teamwork, leadership, multi-tasking, and planning skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical direction on unusual or difficult problems.
- Identifies necessary resources for long term growth and short-term production needs.
- Evaluate the need for outsourcing of work, company selection and contracting.
- Provide administrative and technical supervision to their individual contributors.
- Strategically hires internal and external talent.
- Direct training of discipline personnel (including technical, project execution and personal development).
- Conduct necessary formal and informal personnel reviews and gives continuous feedback; implements those results into salary planning, career development, training, and employee improvement plans.
- Clearly and comfortably delegates both routine and important tasks to their individual contributors.
- Builds strategic relationships by frequent interaction with technical societies, consultants, and clients.
- Develop or evaluate new systems, equipment/materials, software or procedures to enhance engineering disciplines. Ensures latest technology (both technical and project management) are used or considered in developing MECS’s designs.
- Supports proposal and contract development; this includes project strategy, man-hour estimates, scope definition, and schedule definition to maximize MECS’s potential for success, and minimize risk.
- Maintains professional contacts with peers within and outside MECS to insure latest technical advances are known and to establish a network for outsourcing work when required.
- Capability to travel to international plants or meetings alone, if required
Key Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- 4-year Mechanical Engineering degree with 6-15 years of related engineering experience.
- EIT or PE is strongly preferred
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Flexibility and interest in some international travel.
- Demonstration of working well within a team atmosphere is preferred.
- Team player successfully executed numerous projects spanning multiple technologies and varying complexities as a Lead Engineer.
- Knowledge and awareness of design codes and regulations.
