Global Technical Systems (GTS) provides innovative, cost-effective, high-tech engineering products and product-based services encompassing latest generation software and hardware solutions and engineering services for defense, homeland security, and other critical Government interests. GTS products and services span a spectrum that includes: mission-critical combat systems processors; C4ISR; technology development including threat detection, biometric identification systems, and composite applications for munitions, armor and energy storage; avionics test systems; and lifecycle logistics support and repair. Our Headquarters office in Virginia Beach, VA is searching for a Design Engineer I to work in-person at 421 South Birdneck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23451.
- Works with Engineering and Program Management to transfer ideas into the core product process.
- Works with Engineering Department and team members to facilitate design ideas and improve current products.
- Daily interaction with customers, vendors, other engineers, production floor and the program manager to successfully complete projects.
- Manages CAD designer tasking and provides on time delivery of completed detailed designs.
- Overall responsibility for the quality assurance of all GTS mechanical design artifacts.
- Participates in a team of highly skilled professionals to research and design major new systems and architectures for rapid prototyping, development and test.
- Participates in brainstorming sessions used to develop product ideas and problem solutions.
- Conducts technical research to understand alternate approaches to a problem and be able to support the merits of a proposed solution.
- Originates design documents and concept papers consistent with project efforts for review by senior engineers.
- Uses appropriate engineering techniques and Manufacturing/Purchasing processes and technology to produce cost effective designs considering applicable safety and environmental regulations and standards.
- Manages multiple Engineering Design Projects simultaneously. Perform project management functions by working within cross-functional teams. Report project status as needed to management and take necessary steps to maintain project design schedules.
- Produces full engineering documentation including, but not limited to: detailed engineering drawings, bills of material, and any other items related to a Technical Data Package.
- Provides tutoring / mentoring to junior members of the technical staff.
- 1-2 years CAD experience in Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical, or a similar specific engineering area.
- BS/BA in Engineering/Science
- Preparing and completing designs, layouts, drawings for specific elements of products being developed and/or improved per project plan/schedule consistent with assigned project and product line objective.
- Must possess the ability to create complex designs and written work instructions
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to do more complex drafting design and analysis
- Ability to plan, organize, and deliver the complete drawing packages for a design project
- Ability to review and approve all types of drawings and a high degree of specialization in electrical, mechanical or electromechanical
- Ability to check materials and components selected
- Ability to utilize current industry standard techniques and maintain a working knowledge of governing industry practices, government standards and specifications, ANSI/ASME drafting standards and drafting procedures
- A solid working knowledge of materials, welding, heat treating, iridizing, anodizing and finishing processes, and manufacturing methods and capabilities · High level of knowledge and ability in the use of Solid Works.
- Ability to create documents such as safety rules, operating & maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals ·
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment · Strong organizational skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities. ·
- Ability to accurately articulate concepts, theories and system design attributes to junior team members as well as senior management. ·
- High level of knowledge and ability in the use of Microsoft Office® products
- Ability to acquire and maintain a DoD security clearance if required by contract.
- Ability to handle and accurately execute multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work both independently and in highly collaborative teams.
- Experience in Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- Performs engineering calculations/analysis as required or utilizes analysis tools such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to determine the size and strength of parts, solve design problems, and check computations contributing to analytical designs.
